課程概述

Introducing Digital Humanities (hereafter DH) as a tool to the course 「Discovering Taiwan (發現臺灣)」 has a number of advantages that are beneficial to the academic and student community. Within an increasingly globalized and IT-driven world, it is of the upmost importance to introduce and involve students from an early stage onwards. The selection for the DH tool using Story Map is not coincidental, but has proven extremely useful throughout the development of a MOST funded research project focusing on the mobility of the Dutch community in 17th century Taiwan (Dutch Formosa).

教學目標

The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to a variety of academic sources that each in their own right represent aspects that lead us to discover the history, the culture, society and political structure of Taiwan, past and present. The course outline seeks collaboration between classroom teachers and technology, and promotes a need for knowledge about technology in the humanities and social sciences. To this end, the course will integrate the software application STORY MAP and related general concepts of Digital Humanities (DH) combined with a solid introduction to databases and related open access and open source materials easily accessible. In reaching out to the growing foreign student numbers, this course will make use of both Chinese language and English language materials, in addition to providing a selection of sources in other languages depending on the language competences of the students.

修課條件

1. Introducing databases that store visual materials and textual information related to Taiwan Studies. Students select a topic of their interest which they will develop into a STORYMAP narrative
2. Explanation of STORYMAP usage: students are given a template format with designated categories to optimize study results.
3. Deepening the narrative with secondary research articles and academic literature.
4. Creating their own STORYMAP narrative case study.

授課方式

課堂教學+小組討論 (佔總授課時數 1/3 以上)

成績評量方式

1. Preparatory work and presentation of the group work: story map
2. Preparatory work (期中考分組報告) : 40%
3. End product (期末考分組報告) : 60%
